FISHER HOUSE QUILTS
Helping Military Families
Supporting America's military in their time of
need, we provide "a home away from home"
that enables family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful
time --
during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury.
They had the dedication of the Fisher House on Oct. 29th but the house is still not completed and
ready to use, as of November 14, 2008. I have been in contact with the person in charge and she will
let me know when it will be finished. I have contacted WFAA (channel 8) and waiting to see if they
are interested on doing a small spot on TAQG and the quilts and I’ve also contacted The Dallas Morning
News and got the same answer. If I can’t work that out we will go ahead and get the quilts together and
get some pictures and see what papers will pick up the story. If you have ideas or help please call Dorris
at 972-278-9779 or 972-971-9307. If you have questions you may also contact me. I have talked to
Libby and she will try to set up a time for the quilters to tour the house before the families start to use it.
Safe comfortable housing will soon be available for families of veterans receiving health care at VA North Texas Health Care System, Dallas. Construction of a Fisher House, similar to Ronald McDonald House accommodations, will provide “a home away from home” at Dallas VA Medical Center-free temporary lodging for families of VA patients. Construction of the Fisher House on the campus at Dallas VA Medical Center is underway and the projected completion date is September 2008. The Fisher House will include a 21-suite 2 story house, complete with a common kitchen, laundry facilities, spacious dining room, living room, library, picnic pavilion and toys for children. An elevator will provide access to the second floor.
Quilt Guilds are providing
quilts for each suite. We are still short a few
Queens size. and of course
we will need crib size as an on going project because
they will be given to the children when they leave.
